The worlds I see - Dr. Fei-Fei li - book overview

Read this book - The worlds I See -while travelling to and from conferences across the last week. Borrowed from the local library via the Libby app and read on my phone. The book was published in 2023, just before the arrival of ChatGPT.

Dr. Li is well-known as 'the god-mother' of AI through her work on Imagenet in 2009 which provides a large database of labelled images. This dataset can be drawn to test and also to inform the AI models towards refinement into the Large Language Models (LMM) used now by Gen AI.

The book tells the story not only of AI and Imagenet, but also her personal story. She immigrated to the US of A at the age of 15 in 1993. Her narrative as an immigrant and scientist is told eloquently.

The book has several good sections on how AI works, its origins, the continual challenges leading to peaks and troughs on its relevance and usablility, along with an inside look into the foundational computer science required to programme it.

Overall, a recommendated read to better understand how AI has developed and the massive amount of human effort put into establishing the models required for generative AI to now progress from.
